Your complete guide to getting around Sucre - from airport transfers to local transport

Getting Around Sucre

Sucre's compact center makes walking the default. But when you need wheels the city runs on shared micros and triciclos, the former are minivans that loop the main avenues every few minutes for pocket-change fares, the latter are pedal cabs good for the final uphill blocks to Recoleta. Taxis are plentiful and cheap by Bolivian standards. Look for the yellow-and-white plates and insist the driver uses the meter (or agree on a fare before you board). There's no ride-hailing app with reliable coverage here, so flagging on the street is normal. First-timer heads-up: micros list their route on the windshield but rarely stop unless you wave vigorously. The most useful line for visitors runs along Calle Junín and Calle Arce, linking the central plaza with the bus-terminal area. After dark, micros thin out, switch to radio-taxis called from your hotel or any café; they're only a fraction more than street pickups and far safer. From Alcantarí Airport, the only public option is a shared minivan shuttle that meets each arrival and drops at Plaza 25 de Mayo; it's cheap and faster than the scenic route some taxis take to inflate the fare. Skip the unmarked cars that swarm the exit, head to the official transport desk just inside the terminal to book the shuttle or a metered taxi.

Quick Transportation Tips

Download EasyTaxi before you land. Sucre's hills punish anyone who waits. The app locks in reliable cabs. Skip the street hail gamble. You will thank yourself later.

Spot trufis by the route numbers. They are painted right on the windshield. Route 3 links the main plaza to the airport road. Shared minivans leave when full. Pay the driver in cash.

Walk to Plaza 25 de Mayo. Hail a cab yourself. The fare to the bus terminal runs roughly half what hotels quote for the identical ride. Same distance, half the cost. Easy math.

Calle Argentina hosts Mercado Central trufi stop. This is the hub. Board here for onward transport to Tarabuco and other villages. Ask the driver for departure times. Seats fill fast.
