Things to Do at Dinosaur Footprints at Cal Orck'o

Cal Orcko is one of those places that makes you feel genuinely small in the grand scheme of things - and I mean that in the best possible way. This limestone cliff face, sitting right on the outskirts of Sucre, contains what's likely the largest collection of dinosaur footprints in the world. We're talking about over 5,000 individual tracks from at least eight different species, all preserved in what was once a shallow lake bed about 68 million years ago. What's particularly striking about Cal Orcko is how the geological forces essentially did us a favor by tilting this ancient lake bed nearly vertical, creating this massive wall of footprints that you can actually see and study. The tracks tell stories of daily dinosaur life - you can follow their paths, see where they paused, even spot places where different species crossed paths. It's the kind of discovery that happened somewhat by accident when a cement company was quarrying limestone here in the 1990s, which gives you a sense of how many incredible things might still be hidden just beneath our feet.

Cal Orcko sits 5 kilometers from Sucre's center. Getting there won't challenge you-grab a taxi for around 25-30 BOB or book an organized tour from town. Local micro buses work too. Line 4 runs from the main market area, though you'll need to ask locals for the exact stop since signage is poor. The site is well-marked once you arrive. Parking is decent if you've rented a car in Sucre.
